The Story of Zacchaeus

Station 1 - By the bench to the left of the porch

Start your journey here. In Jesus’ time a city called Jericho was ruled by the Romans. The local people did not like the Romans and did not want them in charge. Zacchaeus was a local man who was a tax collector who worked for the Romans taking money from everyone to give to them and also charging them more than he was supposed to and keeping the extra for himself. He was very rich. All the local people hated him.

Questions to ask and think about.

1 Why do you think everyone hated Zacchaeus?
2 Why do you think Zacchaeus charged too much and kept the money for himself?
3 How do you think Zacchaeus felt?
4 Which flowerpot person is Zacchaeus do you think?

Station 2 -  Under the tree opposite the porch

One day Jesus came to visit Jericho. By this time he was famous local teacher and holy person who was famous for teaching about God and doing miracles such as healing people of their illnesses. Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus but he knew it would be very crowded and he was very short so he was worried he wouldn’t be able to see over everyone.

Questions to ask and think about.

1 By looking at the flowerpot people can you spot the clever idea that Zacchaeus had so that he could see Jesus?
2 Can you spot Jesus? How can you tell that he has seen Zacchaeus?
3 Would you have liked to be in the crowd seeing Jesus? How do you think they all felt?

Jesus called Zacchaeus down from the tree because he wanted to talk to him.

Station 3 -  Under the very tall fir tree behind the war memorial further into the graveyard.

Jesus said to Zacchaeus “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”  The crowd muttered  things angrily like “He has gone to be the guest of a bad person.”

Questions to ask and think about.

1 How do you think Zacchaeus felt when Jesus called him by his name and said he was coming to stay with him?
2 Why do you think the local people were angry?
3 How would you feel if a special person like Jesus chose to go and stay with someone who was so bad and unpopular?

Station 4 -  Round the other side of the Church under a tree.

Jesus went to have supper and stay at Zacchaeus’ house. After Jesus had talked to Zacchaeus, Zacchaeus said “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of everything I own to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”
Jesus said  “Today the people in this house have been saved because this man is a person too and I came to seek and to save people who are lost.”

Questions to ask and think about.

1 What did Zacchaeus do that showed he was sorry for the wrong things he had done?
2 Was he still going to be rich? How do you think he felt about that?
3 What do you think Jesus meant by ‘lost’?
4 What do you think happened next with Zacchaeus?

Jesus often chose to talk to, eat with and stay with people that had made mistakes, were bad or unpopular. This is because he wants everyone to get to know him and he loves every single person even if they are bad and unpopular.

Look at the picnic rug - there’s space for you too. You could sit down and have a drink or a snack with Jesus and Zacchaeus.

What do you think Jesus might say to you if you did? What would you talk about? You can say these things to him while you sit there because the real Jesus, not the flowerpot Jesus!, is listening and always wants to hear what you have to say.
