PRODUCT FOCUS:  BROWN AND WHITE RICE FROM MALAWI

This delicious African premium rice is brought to us by JTS a not-for-profit company working in partnership with NSFAM a smallholder rice farmers association.  The rich alluvial soils in the Karonga region on the northern shores of Lake Malawi and the warm African sun produce the country’s favourite aromatic rice.  The rice is grown by traditional cultivation methods which protect the environment and have sustained local communities for centuries.  Farmers receive a fair and stable price for their rice, which means they can plan and invest in their businesses.  In this way they can increase their incomes, provide greater food security for their communities and support and educate their families.  Our purchases of this fairly traded rice means smallholder farmers can meet the growing global demand for food in ways which do not damage the environment and which protect and sustain agricultural communities across Africa.  One farmer Abdul Piri comments:  “At first I used rice seed that did not give my any profit.  But then I joined NASFAM, our famers’ association.  They gave me good advice and a guaranteed price.  I had this wish to buy a plough and two cows to help me farm and I managed to get that dream.  The money that we make pays for school fees and even the house we live in.  My idea is to encourage all my children to study at school to a high level.  I am saving some money to help them in the future.  Please do try this lovely rice; I am sure you will not be disappointed.  £3.35 for a kilo of brown or white.
