At 7pm tonight please light a candle in your own home, place it perhaps in your window and use this ancient prayer:

Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord;
and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night;
for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Pentecost Sunday 2020

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
All   And also with you.
Alleluia. Christ is risen.
All   He is risen indeed. Alleluia.

Introduction from Rev Jenny Tebboth and Bishop Alan

The president introduces the service

Jesus Christ, whom we worship, is our crucified, risen and ascended Lord
and we have walked with him through his journey of love.
We have faced the agony of his suffering and death on a cross.
We have rejoiced at his bursting free from the bonds of death.
We have enjoyed his risen presence with us and his revelation of himself through the
breaking of bread. We have seen his return to the throne before which every knee
shall bow and every tongue confess that this Jesus is Lord.
And now, with the followers of his own time,
we await the coming of the promised Holy Spirit, his gift to his people,
through whom we make Christ known to the world.

Responsory

As we wait in silence,
All   fill us with your Spirit.

As we listen to your word,
All   fill us with your Spirit.

As we worship you in majesty,
All   fill us with your Spirit.

As we long for your refreshing,
All   fill us with your Spirit.

As we long for your renewing,
All   fill us with your Spirit.

As we long for your equipping,
All   fill us with your Spirit.

As we long for your empowering,
All   fill us with your Spirit.

Silence is kept.

HYMN – Come Down O Love Divine

Come down, O Love divine,
Seek thou this soul of mine,
And visit it with thine own ardour glowing;
O Comforter, draw near,
Within my heart appear,
And kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.

O let it freely burn,
Till earthly passions turn
To dust and ashes in its heat consuming;
And let thy glorious light
Shine ever on my sight,
And clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

And so the yearning strong,
With which the soul will long,
Shall far out pass the power of human telling;
For none can guess its grace,
Till Love create a place
Wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling.

United Methodist Hymnal, 1989

Confession

The Spirit of the Lord fills the world and knows our every word and deed.
Let us then open ourselves to the Lord and confess our sins in penitence and faith.
We have not always worshipped God, our creator.
Lord, have mercy.
All: Lord, have mercy.

We have not always followed Christ, our Saviour.
Christ, have mercy.
All: Christ, have mercy.

We have not always trusted in the Spirit, our guide.
Lord, have mercy.
All: Lord, have mercy.

Canticle (Absolution)

God says; ‘I will take you from the nations,  and gather you from all the countries.
I will sprinkle clean water upon you,  and you shall be clean from all your uncleanness.

A new heart I will give you, and put a new spirit within you,
And I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
You shall be my people,  and I will be your God.
Ezekiel 36.24-26,28b

Hymn: Be Still for the presence of the Lord is here

Be still for the presence of the Lord
The Holy One is here
Come bow before Him now
With reverence and fear
In Him no sin is found
We stand on holy ground
Be still for the presence of the Lord
The Holy One is here

Be still for the glory of the Lord
Is shining all around
He burns with holy fire
With splendour He is crowned
How awesome is the sight
Our radiant King of light
Be still for the glory of the Lord
Is shining all around

Be still for the power of the Lord
Is moving in this place
He comes to cleanse and heal
To minister His grace
No work too hard for Him
In faith receive from Him
Be still for the power of the Lord
Is moving in this place

The Creed

All   We believe in God the Father,
from whom every family
in heaven and on earth is named.
We believe in God the Son,
who lives in our hearts through faith,
and fills us with his love.
We believe in God the Holy Spirit,
who strengthens us with power from on high.
We believe in one God;
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Amen.

The Peace

God has made us one in Christ.
He has set his seal upon us and, as a pledge of what is to come,
has given the Spirit to dwell in our hearts. Alleluia.

cf 2 Corinthians 1.22

The peace of the Lord be always with you
All   and also with you.

These words may be added
Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

Prayer for Personal Renewal

Be with us, Spirit of God;
All   nothing can separate us from your love.

Breathe on us, breath of God;
All   fill us with your saving power.

Speak in us, wisdom of God;
All   bring strength, healing, and peace.

Blessed are you, sovereign God and eternal Father.
Daily your Spirit renews the face of the earth,
bringing strength out of weakness,
hope out of despair and life out of death.
By the power of your Spirit,
may your blessing rest upon us as we gather before you
Let it be for us a sign of your acceptance and adoption,
your equipping and empowering.
Form in us the likeness of Christ,
that we may be witnesses of your astonishing love,
and fill us afresh with life in all its fullness.

Reflective music – ‘Spirit of the Living God’

Blessing of Light

With Pentecost dawns the age of the Spirit.
Now the flame of heaven rests on every believer.
Strong and weak, women and men tell out your word;
the young receive visions, the old receive dreams.
With the new wine of the Spirit we proclaim God’s reign of love.
Amid the birth pangs of the new creation the way of light is made known.
Source of freedom, giver of life, blessed are you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
All   Blessed be God for ever.

Final Hymn: Bind us together (virtual choir)

Refrain: Bind us together, Lord, bind us together

With cords that cannot be broken.
Bind us together, Lord, bind us together, Lord,
Bind us together in love.

There is only one God, there is only one King,
There is only one Body, that is why we sing:
Refrain

Made for the glory of God; purchased by his precious son;
Born with the right to be clean, for Jesus the victory has won
Refrain

You are the family of God; you are the promise divine.
You are God’s chosen desire, you are the glorious new wine.
Refrain

Conclusion

Today we have remembered the coming of God’s power on the disciples and we invite
that same Spirit to drive us out into the wild places of the world.

May the Spirit, who hovered over the waters when the world was created,
breathe into you the life he gives.
All   Amen.

May the Spirit, who overshadowed the Virgin when the eternal Son came among us,
make you joyful in the service of the Lord.
All   Amen.

May the Spirit, who set the Church on fire upon the Day of Pentecost,
bring the world alive with the love of the risen Christ.
All   Amen.

And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you always.
All   Amen.

Filled with the Spirit’s power, go in the light and peace of Christ. Alleluia, alleluia.
All   Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia.
