Sunday Worship

Sept 20    2020          Trinity 15   (in ‘Corona time’)

Welcome – words from Ian Brown

The light and peace of Jesus Christ be with you

and also with you.

The glory of the Lord has risen upon us.

Let us rejoice and sing God’s praise for ever.

Hymn: Guide me O thou great redeemer

Guide me, O thou great redeemer,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty;
Hold me with thy powerful hand:
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
Feed me now and evermore,
Feed me now and evermore.

Open now the crystal fountain
Whence the healing stream doth flow;
Let the fiery cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through:
Strong deliverer, strong deliverer,
Be thou still my strength and shield,
Be thou still my strength and shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death, and hell's destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan's side:
Songs and praises, songs and praises,
I will ever give to thee,
I will ever give to thee.

Lord God,

defend your Church from all false teaching

and give to your people knowledge of your truth,

that we may enjoy eternal life

in Jesus Christ our Lord.

All: Amen

Prayers of penitence:

Invitation to Confession:

In baptism we died with Christ, so that as Christ was raised from the dead, we also might walk in newness of life.  Let us receive new life in him as we confess our sins in penitence and faith

Jesus Christ, risen Master and triumphant Lord,

we come to you in sorrow for our sins,

and confess to you our weakness and unbelief.

We have lived by our own strength,

and not by the power of your resurrection.

In your mercy, forgive us.

All: Lord, hear us and help us.

We have lived by the light of our own eyes,

as faithless and not believing.

In your mercy, forgive us.

All: Lord, hear us and help us.

We have lived for this world alone,

and doubted our home in heaven.

In your mercy, forgive us.

All: Lord, hear us and help us.

May the God of love and power forgive you and free you from your sins,

heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord.

Hymn:  Dear Lord and father of mankind

Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
Forgive our foolish ways!
Reclothe us in our rightful mind,
In purer lives Thy service find,
In deeper reverence, praise.

In simple trust like theirs who heard
Beside the Syrian sea
The gracious calling of the Lord,
Let us, like them, without a word
Rise up and follow Thee.

O Sabbath rest by Galilee!
O calm of hills above,
Where Jesus knelt to share with Thee
The silence of eternity
Interpreted by love!

With that deep hush subduing all
Our words and works that drown
The tender whisper of Thy call,
As noiseless let Thy blessing fall
As fell Thy manna down.

Drop Thy still dews of quietness,
Till all our strivings cease;
Take from our souls the strain and stress,
And let our ordered lives confess
The beauty of Thy peace.

Breathe through the heats of our desire
Thy coolness and Thy balm;
Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
O still, small voice of calm.

Paul Henderson

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.

The Peace

God is love

And those who live in love live in God

And God lives in them

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

All: And also with you

Spiritual communion (with short explanation)

We are invited to make a spiritual communion with God who comes to meet us wherever we are. There are no special words or prayers for this. All the Church has ever thought necessary is a true desire to receive Christ, a lively faith in Christ, and a genuine love for Christ and his people.

Music to be played:   The Lord is my light    (Taize)

Lord Jesus Christ, bread of life, we have come together in your name to feast in your presence and be strengthened in your service as the body of Christ here on earth.  We look forward to the day when we will share together in broken bread and wine outpoured again and to that greater day when we will drink of the fruit of the vine in the kingdom of God.

HYMN     To  God be the glory great things he has done

To God be the glory
Great things He has done
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin
And opened the life-gate that all may go in

Refrain: Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Let the earth hear His voice
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Let the people rejoice
O come to the Father
Through Jesus the Son
And give Him the glory
Great things He has done

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood
To every believer the promise of God
The vilest offender who truly believes
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives

Great things He has taught us, great things He has done
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son
But purer, and higher, and greater will be
Our wonder, our worship, when Jesus we see

Eternal God

Our beginning and our end

Accompany us in this day’s journey

Dawn on our darkness

Open our eyes to praise you for your creation

And to see the work you set before us today

Take us and use us

To bring to others the new life you give in Jesus Christ our Lord

And the blessing ……..

Music to end: In my Father’s house (Welsh male voice choir)
